If you are pregnant, it is important to know what is going on inside of you. Surprisingly, things happen quickly even early on when you may not even know you are pregnant.

Conception

The new embryo is genetically unique with 46 chromosomes, 23 from each parent and the sex is determined.

Week 3

Blood cells and vessels are developing along with the thyroid gland. Many organ systems and the brain begin to develop. The heart begins to beat on day 22.

Week 4

The eyes, liver, tongue, spinal cord and stomach begin to develop. Upper and lower limbs begin to appear.

Week 5

The esophagus, trachea, external ears and hand plates begin to develop. The spleen is formed. The ribs begin to form and lengthen.

Week 6

The upper and lower eyelids begin to appear. The feet, legs and thighs have become distinct (day 33). The kidneys are forming (day 40).

Weeks 7-8

The organs and systems of the body are formed. The elbows appear. The first hair follicles appear. All regions of the arms and legs are well-developed. Insertion of the fingers into the mouth has been observed.

Week 9

Yawning first occurs. Hair follicles first appear on the eyebrows, eyelids, upper lip, and chin.

Week 12

The sex can be determined from external examination. Stroking the lips causes the fetus to suck and stroking the eyelids results in a reflux response.

Weeks 13-40

The baby's eyes, hands, feet, arms and legs all move. The baby has been observed sucking, opening its mouth, yawning, hiccupping, 'breathing' and doing 'somersaults.' The mother begins to feel her baby moving around weeks 16-18.
